What can you do at the Adelaide Zoo? The Adelaide Zoo became home to two Giant Pandas during December 2009. Wang-Wang and Funi are the latest animals to take up residence in the Adelaide Zoo.

You can find the Zoo located just opposite the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, another location worthy of a visit while in Adelaide. The Zoo has made major renovations to accommodate the Giant Pandas. Wang-Wang and Funi will live in state of the art accommodation; each panda will have an exhibit the size of large Adelaide house block. The pandas are solitary animals, which is why they need so large of a space, except at breeding time. At breeding time a divider between the two will be removed allowing the pandas to meet.

The pandas have chilled rocks for sitting on, streams for washing in and trees to climb and keep them entertained and exercised. There will be plenty of bamboo to feast on as well. One of the main reasons for having a pair of Giant Pandas at the Adelaide Zoo is to participate in the conservation of this endangered species. The Zoo is hoping that at least one cub will be born in Adelaide while the pandas are staying there. Behind the scenes tours of the Giant Pandas exhibit are expected to start in February of 2010. Check the Adelaide Zoo website for details.

The Adelaide Zoo is in walking distance to some of Adelaide’s other major attractions including the South Australian Museum. You will find a great number of family friendly accommodation places close to the Zoo. Entry to the Zoo will cost adults (over fifteen years old) $26AU and children (four to fourteen years old) $15, family passes are available for $68AU. The Zoo is open from 9.30am to 5pm daily.
