What can you do at the Adelaide Zoo? The Adelaide Zoo became home to two Giant Pandas during December 2009. Wang-Wang and Funi are the latest animals to take up residence in the Adelaide Zoo.
You can find the Zoo located just opposite the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, another location worthy of a visit while in Adelaide. The Zoo has made major renovations to accommodate the Giant Pandas. Wang-Wang and Funi will live in state of the art accommodation; each panda will have an exhibit the size of large Adelaide house block. The pandas are solitary animals, which is why they need so large of a space, except at breeding time. At breeding time a divider between the two will be removed allowing the pandas to meet.
The pandas have chilled rocks for sitting on, streams for washing in and trees to climb and keep them entertained and exercised. There will be plenty of bamboo to feast on as well. One of the main reasons for having a pair of Giant Pandas at the Adelaide Zoo is to participate in the conservation of this endangered species. The Zoo is hoping that at least one cub will be born in Adelaide while the pandas are staying there. Behind the scenes tours of the Giant Pandas exhibit are expected to start in February of 2010. Check the Adelaide Zoo website for details.
The Adelaide Zoo is in walking distance to some of Adelaide’s other major attractions including the South Australian Museum. You will find a great number of family friendly accommodation places close to the Zoo. Entry to the Zoo will cost adults (over fifteen years old) $26AU and children (four to fourteen years old) $15, family passes are available for $68AU. The Zoo is open from 9.30am to 5pm daily.

Just outside of Adelaide is the town of Kapunda. Kapunda is known as the town that saved the colony of South Australia from bankruptcy. In 1838 a pastoralist came across some stones, they were a moss color. Not long after the moss colored stone discovery South Australia would open its first copper mine. 1845 saw a discovery that would be the beginning of the world’s largest mine known as the Burra Monster Mine. Many migrants came to South Australia from places like Scotland Wales and of course England.
Auburn was a town purely to service the Gulf Copper Trail. The Gulf Copper Trail is the route between the merchant ships at Spencer Gulf and Burra. The Gulf Copper Trail was for bullock teams. A bullock team driver could expect a good meal and a good nights sleep in Auburn on his way to the coast with copper ore or home again with mining supplies. Park up the bullocks and rest your weary head.
Were there are mines there is money. In and around this area you will find many mansions. One of the best is Martindale hall which was built in 1879 by Mister Edmund Bowman. Many men made their fortune in the copper mines and from owning the land that it lay in. You can find yourself touring the towns of Kapunda and Burra, maybe even following the Gulf Copper Trail, in something more comfortable than a bullock train by hiring a car from carhireadelaideairport.com.au. Guaranteed no hidden fees and charges, pick up your car from the Adelaide Airport and set off on your heritage copper adventure. carhireadelaideairport.com.au is able to provide many quotes from companies with a rental car desk at the Adelaide Airport. In 1985 the Himeji Garden was built in Adelaide symbolizing the friendship between the city of Adelaide and the Himeji region in Japan. The gardens are a symbolic way for the people of Australia to gain understanding of Japan and Japanese culture. The Himeji Garden site was chosen in part due to the beautiful trees that could already be found there. The Garden provides many beautiful places to sit and meditate, or stroll through and feel the peacefulness of the Adelaide Himeji Garden. Two distinct styles of Japanese gardening have been used here. The Senzui style of gardening, lake and mountain garden, where a small pond or water feature can be given a sense of grandness and vastness has been used. The second gardening style used to create the gardens is kare senzui, dry garden; this is where rocks and sand are used to depict water and the ocean.

Since we had been to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth it was high time that we took a trip to Adelaide to see the southern city and find out what was fun to do there. When we arrived we found that there were many things fun to do like visit the historical buildings and some of the local pubs for lunch or dinner as well as the magnificent cafés that Adelaide had to offer. Adelaide is a relatively quiet city compared to all the other cities we have been to which really was part of its charm.
We spent time looking at the art galleries and taking walks along the beach at night and going for an early morning body surf as soon as we woke up. Next time we travel here which will hopefully be sooner rather than later we will book a hotel by the beach so we don’t have to go as far in the mornings. We will also book ahead to take some of the tours like the whale watching tour and the twelve apostles tour down the Great Ocean Road.
It was a good thing that we hired a car from professional people because we like to have a reliable car when we travel. There were no problems with our car hire Adelaide airport vehicle which got us to all the nice places that Adelaide had to offer.

Once we were in Adelaide I started to lose the butterflies that I had in my stomach because it was becoming clear that moving here was going to be a great idea after all. The weather was nice and the streets were easy to navigate through so I felt right at home from the very beginning. We had to move to Adelaide because the wife had just been given a position in the Adelaide University so we took the chance and flew straight down.
Using the internet was the best way to find the things that we wanted like the removal company to take our furniture and the tickets for the flights. The other important booking was the rental car which we secured through a car hire Adelaide agent. Using their car to get around the city looking for places to live was a fabulous idea because the car came with maps, GPS and was very nice to drive.
